100 Years of Memories at the Hidden Gem

It began with a meeting of enthusiastic locals on April 22, 1922. Today, over a century later, we celebrate the foresight of those pioneers who turned a shared passion into the thriving community we enjoy today.

Key Milestones

  • 1922 – The Club was formed with 17 gentlemen and 16 ladies. The official Opening Day was 27 May 1922 on a nine hole course laid out around the McLean homestead.

  • 1935 – 12 March the Walton Ladies Golf Club was formed.

  • 1937 – The Hutchinson Road links was extended from 9 holes to a professionally laid out 18 holes, and the Waikato Farmers Cup tournament was established.

  • 1942 – The Club went into recess for four years during World War 2.

  • 1952 – The Clubhouse was moved closer to Hutchinson Road so power could be installed

  • 1972 – In December the Club approached the Piako County Council for support to purchase 125 acres of farmland on Walton-Kiwitahi Road for the development of a golf course.

  • 1973 – Under the direction of course architect Mr Harry Dale, the new golf course was formed. The Clubhouse was built in 1974.

  • 1978 – Sheep were excluded from the first nine holes and the fairways were mown.

  • 1984 – An extension was built on the Clubhouse to provide men’s and women’s separate changing rooms and toilets.

  • 1978 – Sheep were excluded from grazing the course and fences around the greens were removed.

  • 1991 – Renovations and extension of the Clubhouse lounge were carried out.

  • 1999 – Walton Nine Hole Ladies group was established.

  • 2008 – The digital age arrived at Walton with the installation of the dotgolf touchscreen and creation of a website.

  • 2013 – To mark 40 years on this course, a fountain was donated by Mr Ivan and Phyllis Wilcock for the pond on the 7th fairway.

  • 2020 – The course was closed March-May for the Covid-19 pandemic

  • 2021 – Stone wall displaying Walton Golf Club signage built and large concrete assembly area laid in front of the Clubhouse. Several blocks of trees milled. The inaugural Walton Men’s Masters Tournament was held.

  • 2022 – Part-time Assistant Duty Managers employed to host increasing numbers of visiting golfers, A new Consititution approved at the Dec AGM.

  • 2023 – 100 years celebrations held on Sunday 26 March. On 1 September the first Club Manager (Keith Vincent) commenced duties to oversee day-to-day operations at the Club.

  • 2024 – A new governance and management structure introduced to oversee the Club with a Board and three Committees (Golf, Grounds and Estate, Operations). Women’s Nine Hole group celebrates 25 years of Nine Hole Golf at Walton.

  • 2025 – Membership hits 441. A new Greenkeeper Shed constructed, irrigation of most tees and removal of trees by the practice fairway and entrance. Pro-Shop partnership with Titliest and FootJoy. Improved financial and operational management with the integration of Eftpos and Dotgolf to Xero software.
